Supporting Our Community This May: Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month

At TOWN, community is a core part of our business.

May marks Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, a time to recognise an issue that affects far too many individuals and families across Australia, including here on the Sunshine Coast.

Domestic and family violence doesn’t always look the way people expect. It’s not just physical. It can be emotional, financial, and psychological, often happening quietly behind closed doors.

And while it can feel like something distant, the reality is that it exists within our own communities.

Our Commitment at TOWN

Through every property we sell, a portion of our commission is contributed to the TOWN Community Fund.

It’s a commitment we’ve built into our business, allowing us to consistently support local organisations and causes that make a meaningful difference.

This May, we are directing 100% of the TOWN Community Fund to organisations on the Sunshine Coast that support individuals and families impacted by domestic and family violence.

Supporting Local Organisations

This month, we are proud to support both SunnyKids and Somewhere to Go Foundation.

SunnyKids provides critical support to children and families experiencing domestic and family violence, helping them feel safe and supported during incredibly challenging times.

Somewhere To Go Foundation, launching this May, is a local Community Centre supporting women and children in the space between leaving and healing through community connection, practical support, recovery programs and pathways to rebuilding their lives on the Sunshine Coast.

These organisations play an essential role in our community, offering both immediate support and long-term pathways to safety and recovery

Getting Involved as a Community

Alongside our Community Fund contribution, we’re also supporting DV Safe Phone, an initiative that provides safe, working mobile phones to individuals impacted by domestic and family violence.

Access to a phone can be critical for someone seeking help, staying connected, or safely leaving a dangerous situation.

Throughout May, we will have a collection point at the TOWN office, and we invite our community to donate any old mobile phones they no longer need.

It’s a simple way to make a real difference.

Why This Matters

“This is a cause that’s very close to my heart. I’ve seen firsthand the impact domestic and family violence can have, and it’s something no individual or family should ever have to experience. As a business deeply committed to our community, supporting organisations like SunnyKids and Somewhere to Go Foundation is one way we can contribute to meaningful change locally.”
- Jaymee Morrison, TOWN

A Collective Effort

We know this is bigger than any one business. But through our team, our clients, and our broader community, we have an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution.

Every property sold this month, and every phone donated, plays a part in supporting those who need it most.

Eligibility and Processes for Phone Donation

With so many phone brands and models out there, it’s hard to give a one-size-fits-all answer on what can be repurposed, but here’s a good guide.

iPhones
We can usually repurpose iPhone 6 models and newer, including iPhone 7, 8, X and later.

Android phones
That includes Samsung and other Android brands. If your phone supports 4G, there’s a strong chance it can be given a second life.

What about 3G phones?
With Australia’s 3G network now switched off, we’re no longer able to repurpose phones that only support 3G connectivity.

Not sure if your phone qualifies?
Send it in anyway. DV Safe Phone will assess whether it can be repurposed, and if it can’t, it’ll securely be wiped of your data and recycled responsibly through MobileMuster. Either way, your phone stays out of landfill.

Preparing Your Phone for Donation

The following are some simple instructions on how to prepare your phone before donating it.

iPhone
Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings
You may be asked for your Apple ID/iCloud password to confirm.

Samsung
Settings → General management → Reset → Factory data reset
You may be asked for your Samsung account password to confirm.

Other Android Phones
Settings → System (or Backup and reset) → Reset → Erase all data (factory reset)
Tip: If you’re having trouble finding these menus on an Android phone, open Settings, use the search bar at the top, type “reset,” and select “Erase all data (factory reset).” Then follow the prompts.
